Head of Design

Are you passionate about innovating within healthcare, and making a difference in patients’ lives? Are you ready to push Novo Nordisk’s drug delivery portfolio through your product design expertise? And are you looking to exercise your leadership skills by developing a talented and diverse design team?

  •  If so, you might be the new Head of Design we are looking for in Devices and Delivery Solutions (DDS).

The position

The Head of Design is responsible for the continued excellence of our design team, and for the quality of design deliverables throughout the development process (of products such as injection devices, support products, and patient-facing applications). As well, you will be developing team members and processes while also driving new strategic design and innovation initiatives.

An outspoken champion for user-centred design, you will effectively influence and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders inside and outside of DDS. You will be responsible for creating and maintaining design standards across product categories, and for maintaining our position as the Centre of Excellence for design within Novo Nordisk.

You will lift the voice and skills of our specific design competencies, while further establishing design thinking methods across the organization. In this role, you will report to the Vice President of Design and User Experience (also a product designer) and will be a part of a larger cross-disciplinary group of leaders at Novo Nordisk.

Main responsibilities relate to below areas:

• People & Team Development: Attract and retain top talent and foster a class-leading design team. Create a culture of design leadership with deep levels of trust, and with a significant focus on personal development and team agility.

• Design Excellence: Leverage your design experience to enable industry-leading products.

• Cross-Disciplinary Innovation: Seek out opportunities and plan projects that create holistic and superior user experiences for users.

• Process Development: Define and refine processes to optimize design activities with the aim of appropriately establishing user needs and associated design criteria, accelerating design and development, and creating an empathetic and creative culture.

• Collaboration & Partnerships: Ensure smooth collaboration between DDS and critical internal partners including but not limited to: Product Supply, Marketing, Digital Health, IT, Regulatory, Digital Therapeutics, etc. Build upon and develop meaningful external partnerships across various design partners, digital health ecosystem partners, Universities, and innovators in the field to commercialize meaningful product systems.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you are an ambitious professional with passion and hands-on experience in product design. You possess a deep understanding of industrial design and user experience, strong stakeholder management capabilities, and excellent people management skills.

You are aspirational yet approachable, and confident yet caring. You are someone others look up to and enjoy working with. As well, you have a strong portfolio showcasing a broad set of skills and experience, and a proven track record of design-led innovation.

Additional qualifications sought:

  • Education in relevant design discipline (Industrial Design, Product Design, etc.)
  • 10-15 years of relevant experience (within medical products or another regulated industry preferred, but not required)
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Extensive knowledge of design processes, design management, and design thinking
  • Familiarity with latest, industry standard design tools and software
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to think big while never losing sight of details
  • Fluency in both verbal and written English.

About the Department

In DDS, we are more than 300 colleagues designing and developing innovative device and connectivity products and digital therapeutic solutions to our drug pipeline. Our long-standing tradition of well-designed medical devices earned us the Danish Design Centre’s “Icon Award” in 2020.

Only by considering what is valuable from a patient perspective can we help people live their lives to the fullest. The design team plays a critical role in this development of future devices and digital health solutions, and consists of experienced industrial, graphic, and digital product designers. The design team sits within the broader area of Design and User Experience, also consisting of: User Research and Insights, User Communication, and Prototype Development.

The role of this area is three-fold: 1. To guide the organization and product pipeline by investigating and innovating to the unmet needs of our end users, 2. To create superior and robust product solutions that create value for our end users while differentiating us from our competitors, and 3. To infuse a user-centred design approach across all stages of product development.
