About the position

Scope and Subject Area of the Position

The position is vacant for a fixed-term period of 4 years and constitutes 20 percent of a full-time position. It is available from August 1, 2026.

The subject area of the position is viola.

The responsibilities include teaching and supervising students as well as administrative tasks related to the academic activities within the department. The Norwegian Academy of Music expects the successful candidate to actively contribute to strengthening artistic and academic collaboration among colleagues.

 

Teaching and Supervision

The teaching responsibilities include teaching and supervising viola students at the bachelor's and master's degree levels, in accordance with the current curricula. The teaching will be conducted as both individual and group instruction. Systematic planning, execution, and evaluation of teaching are expected. The position may also include responsibilities such as teaching younger students and other tasks for which the appointee is qualified.

The successful candidate is expected to take the initiative in planning and leading seminars and courses within their field of expertise, in collaboration with other teachers in the subject area. The candidate will also participate in the preparation and execution of the Academy's entrance exams and final examinations.

 

Qualifications

Through the application and attachments, the applicant must document:

  • Artistic qualifications as a violist at an internationally high level.
  • Extensive experience as an orchestral musician, chamber musician, and/or soloist within classical and contemporary music.
  • Relevant pedagogical experience and proven successful teaching results at a high level.
  • Experience with various concert and communication formats.

In the assessment of applicants, special qualifications, skills, and experience relevant for the tasks associated with the position will also be emphasized, including the ability to collaborate, take initiative, demonstrate academic insight and reflection, and carry out planned projects.

The position is announced as a secondary employment position under the regulations of Section 7-7 of the Norwegian Universities and Colleges Act. Employees in such positions may be exempted from the requirement of educational competence and the requirement for Norwegian language skills at a minimum level of B2, which otherwise applies to teaching and research positions. Although such formal requirements are not mandatory, documentation of educational competence will still be emphasized. Applicants are expected to be able to teach in English or a Scandinavian language.

Applicants will be evaluated by an expert committee. It should be noted that the primary focus will be on the assessment of the submitted documentation of artistic and pedagogical qualifications.

Initially, applicants are required to submit only an application with a CV and any attachments such as certificates, diplomas, and descriptions of pedagogical qualifications, which should be uploaded to the electronic application portal. Following an initial evaluation, selected candidates will be asked to provide additional documentation of their artistic qualifications and other relevant materials. Any documentation submitted in physical format, including audio recordings, must be provided in four copies. Shortlisted candidates may also be invited for auditions, trial teaching, and interviews.

 

General Information

The position is subject to the regulations that apply to employees at the Norwegian Academy of Music.

The Norwegian Academy of Music has relatively few female associate professors. Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. In cases of approximately equal qualifications, female applicants will be given preference over male applicants.

The state workforce should, to the greatest extent possible, reflect the diversity of the population. The position is remunerated according to the main collective agreement in the state as an associate professor, with a starting salary corresponding to NOK 750,000–800,000 for a full-time position. For particularly qualified candidates, a higher salary may be considered. A mandatory contribution of 2 percent will be deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
